Older People’s Life Insurance

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Just because you have turned 50, or even 65, does not mean you cannot find affordable life insurance.

When you were younger, you may have had a group policy through your job. Or perhaps you took out a 20 or 30 year term policy and thought that would be enough to get your through your working and raising kids years. That probably sounded like a good plan. After all, you could buy cheaper term with enough of a death benefit to provide for your children and spouse, pay off a mortgage, and provide financial security in case something happened to you.

The thing is, you probably outlived that coverage. That’s what major insurers count on when they sell you those cheaper term policies. Now, just when it is harder to find affordable coverage, you may find that you would still like to provide that same financial security for your loved ones.

Why would an older person even want life insurance?

As we get older, we still find that coverage can be a good part of our financial plans. A spouse may still need our incomes. Sometimes kids do not go out and become independent on their own, and they do need us to provide for them. In fact, many of those kids come home again, and they bring their own kids.

And those mortgages also do not get paid off on schedule all of the time. Sometimes we refinance our home loans, take out a second mortgage, or even move and take on a new mortgage.

Owning a business can give you another big reason to buy coverage at an older age. If the business owner passes away, they need to make sure that there is money to replace their contributions. In addition, only one family member may inherit the company. Other family members may need to be compensated because they do not get to run the business.

Alternatives for older people’s life insurance are on the market these days.

Americans are living longer, and so insurers are more willing to extend coverage to older people. They are also offering lower rates. In fact, rates may be lower now than they were 10 years ago. It is good to know that something is cheaper than it used to be.

You can certainly find many alternatives. Your choices may be limited by several unique factors though. Your age, health, and where you live matter. Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

A few days ago I returned from my trip to Paris with my mother. We visited The Louvre, The Eiffel Tower among others. But before we started enjoying ourselves, we had a very tough time because my mother being over 70 yrs could not find any companies that would insure her. Even though I visited a variety of companies, their fine print specifically stated that travel insurance could not be provided to those senior citizens over 70. However, after searching for a long time, I finally managed to find a few companies that would provide travel insurance for her. When I told her so, the look on her face made my heart melt. I can truly say that this was my best trip ever.

Life Insurance Older

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

If you are an older American, it may be time to compare life insurance quotes even if you still have life insurance! Rates have been dropping over the last 10 years, and you may save money with a new policy. If you were 50 years old in the 1990’s, and you bought a 20 year term policy, you may do better to cover the remaining 10 years with a new policy. You can find lots of affordable life insurance for older people over 50 years old being promoted by top insurers these days.

After a decade has passed, you may also want to evaluate your needs. You may have purchased a large policy to cover your home mortgage, college for the kids, and many other obligations that you really do not have any more. Maybe you could use the money somewhere else.

Americans are living longer and healthier lives, plus improved auto safety standards have reduced traffic fatalities. Insurance actuaries recognize this, and that is why life insurance rates are cheaper, and term life for older people is available. Since insurance sales have become more competitive, companies have also reduced the cost of distribution and marketing to keep up with the changing times. Term life insurance with no medical exam also cuts the insurer’s costs, and this allows them to pass the savings on to insured people. This is certainly good news for all of us.

Final expense insurance for seniors is still a good option for retired people, or those with serious health issues, though we do find term life insurance for 70 years and older too. If you are in reasonably good health, and a younger senior, you may find term coverage. If you have had some health issues, and are closer to 80 than 65, you probably want to check into whole life or final expense policies if you still need coverage.
